September Newsletter 2011

Hello all fellow anglers, Stuie Hindson here from Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures located on the far South Coast of NSW. Well winter is well and truly behind us with summer just around the corner and with it the promise of some memorable angling. The next three months will see us targeting different species as we head through the transition period that this time of year brings.

WINTER TIMES

Jo Nath and Luke BreamBefore we get to that the Winter fishing this season was nothing short of exceptional with Narooma and Mallacoota the stand-outs. I've been fishing the Wagonga system at Narooma for over 25 years and this was certainly the best winter season I have seen. The place was loaded with monster salmon to 4 kilo, good sports fish on light gelspun line more aimed at bream.

With the sambo's there were some quality tailor, a few school mulloway with some sizable snapper and bream under the feeding schools. A lot of this action happened in 2-4 meters of water which is great fun with some days producing 60 fish and more with a quality mixed bag. Further up in the shallows past Punkella creek some solid dusky flathead were encountered with a handful of models over the 80cm being caught and released.

Horse BreamSo as you can see it was pretty full on, I was guiding there again last week and it was still fishing well so it is certainly worth a look. Down at Mallacoota the fishing was excellent before the start of June and after the 15th June. In between that time Coota received a lot of rain and flooded quite substantially with the Genoa River at levels not seen for quite a long time.

There were still a few bream to be found towards the lower sections, but they were hard to entice in the chocolate brown water. But after that the fishing really picked up with some cracking bream being caught on plastics, blades and hard-bodies. Both a mixture of yellowfin and black bream with some solid estuary perch also.

Most sessions yielded 30 bream and more for a day so pretty good fishing with the best bream, a fat yellowfin going 49cm, a cracking fish that would have pushed 2 kilo, well done Ian. I've been guiding there a lot lately, the fish have moved into the Rivers to do there stuff spawning, some good bags are being caught but let these fish go to do their thing. A lot of these fish are in the 38-44 cm bracket, cracking bream in anyone's language.

SPRING TIMES

13kg JewieWell it's time to dust of the heavier gear and target the bigger estuarine species that the South Coast has to offer. September is the start of it all with monster flathead and mulloway the two species that we will be targeting. I'll be concentrating my efforts around Narooma, Tuross and Batemans Bay with bookings for October and November almost booked out.

90 cm froggieWe will be using bigger soft plastics up to 6 inches in a variety of situations mainly around bait schools, working tailor and deeper drop-offs and reef areas mainly for the jewies. The lower sections of these estuaries will hold some big flathead as they head downstream to spawn. Again bigger plastics is the go, the fish don't get gut hooked and releasing them is easy when there hooked lightly in the mouth or apex of the jaw.

As we head towards Summer the surface fishing for bream and whiting will really start to pick up with most estuaries producing. The prawns will be out in force as the estuaries were open at the right time in winter making for a cracking prawning season. This in turn will really turn the bream and whiting on in the shallows with poppers and walk-baits again being popular.

This type of fishing is very exciting and visual, if you haven't tried it give it a go you won't be disappointed though conditions do need to be favourable for best results. Water temperature is critical so if we get cold currents during the summer periods it may be tougher to catch them on surface especially towards the estuary entrances. I'd be concentrating in the upper reaches when this happens, you should have some luck there.

More crackersBig Estuary PerchFor those who like bass and estuary perch it's all systems go for both these super sports fish. Both the Tuross and Bega River systems will be great for bass in the upper reaches, hard-bods, spinnerbaits and surface plugs will all work at times. Those hot afternoons with thunderstorms approaching are ideal for bass especially on surface, some fun will be had.

If the EP's are your go then Batemans Bay, Tuross, Bega River and Wonboyn should keep you happy. With the season now open all of these systems will fire with plastics and hard-bods the go.

You will find they will start to head back upstream in some systems looking for their favourite snags to once again call home. This species is high in my books and a true competitor once hooked, hang on.....
